Government not interested in conservation of archeological heritage: Shakya

KATHMANDU: Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Vidya Sundar Shakya has complained that the federal government has not shown interest in the protection of historical and archeological heritage of Kathmandu.

Mayor Shakya said that although the federal government has the responsibility to protect the property, it has not acted accordingly. Laying the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the courtyard of the Annapurna Temple at Bhotahiti in Kathmandu on Friday, he claimed that the Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation has started rebuilding all the properties even though the federal government did not provide assistance.

He reiterated that the work is being done as per the policy of the corporation to provide financial assistance for the reconstruction of the property but to give the responsibility of its protection and management to the local guthis.

"We declared during the election that Kathmandu is a historic city, a cultural city. We said it needed to be revived. We took the initiative to protect, promote and link it with tourism. We have been doing everything according to the election manifesto. Even now this editing is the property of the state ', Mayor Shakya said,' It was made by guthiyars earlier. The state should be present when the guthiyar is not able to protect now. The state will also protect it. For that, we have taken the policy of looking after the economic side but giving the task of its protection and management to Guthiar. The federal government did not take responsibility for its protection. We have taken responsibility and accelerated the reconstruction work. '

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has provided Rs. 7.61 million for the reconstruction of the courtyard. According to Tirtha Maharjan, secretary of the Reconstruction Committee, 2.51 million has been released for the first installment and its reconstruction has also started.

According to the committee, the reconstruction of the courtyard will cost around Rs. 15 million. The Reconstruction Committee has stated that the reconstruction work will be completed within two years.
