Nepal Mandal's book 'Hiti Pranali' (water System) released

LALITPUR: Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Chiribabu Maharjan and Vice Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Sunil Babu Shrestha have jointly released the research work written by author Padmasundar Joshi , organized by Lalitpur Metropolitan City.

Mayor Maharjana said that he was most happy when the book on interest was published. "During my previous tenure, there was a deception to show off the interests of Patan," he said. He said that he has succeeded in bringing the land of Saptapatal Pokhari of Lagankhel under the ownership of the city and the campaign to revive Tikabhairav Rajkulo has also moved ahead remarkably. Remembering that they had a feast on the lotus leaves that bloomed in the same pond when they were children, he said, "I want to grow lotus in the same pond again."

Speaking on the occasion, the creator Joshi said that a 20-year plan will be made while designing sustainable urban drinking water schemes today. "If there is a very ambitious plan, it could be 30 years," he said. He said that it is an unimaginable example for the Hitti system, future generations and even the most modern technology in the world.

The Hiti system is a unique and prosperous water management system in the Kathmandu Valley. The earliest written evidence of this system is found in the Kirant and Licchavi periods (about 1700 years ago). Almost all the interests are made in the pit. That is why Hiti is also called Gah Hiti i.e. underground level in Newar language. On one side of the pit, a crocodile-shaped carved stone wall carries water from a pond. Which is called Hitimangah.

A Hitigah has one or more Hitimangs. A four-cornered wooden or terracotta drain is laid underground to bring water to Hitimang. This water drain is called Hitidun. Athals are placed between the hits to change the direction of water flow or to level the surface as required. Hitidu is spread to the source of water.

The book, published by Publication Nepalaya, sheds light on the state of culture and architecture in the Kathmandu Valley up to half a century ago. This work presents a world-class living example of architecture and culture before the current population explosion in the Kathmandu Valley, known as Nepal.
