KATHMANDU: Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Shailesh Thapa Chhetri was appointed 28th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Nepal Police Force. Chhetri was appointed to the post by the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. Chhetri will hold office until May 2, 2022.

New IGP Thakur Gyawali retires on Wednesday after completing his 30-year tenure in the police force. The AIGP duos Shailesh Thapa Chhetri and Hari Pal were vying for the most valuable feather in battle.

Chhetri has been in charge of the Nepal Police Department of Human Resources and Administration. He has successfully taken control of the most challenging areas such as the Jhapa and Kaski districts.

He also carried out demanding roles in the Metropolitan Police Department, Ranipokhara and the police spokesperson. The biggest challenge awaiting the latest IGP is the crisis management caused by COVID-19.

Former AIG Dhakal thinks that crime governs another difficult nut for the freshly feathered head of the police. "The reduction of economic activities due to COIVD-19 that make room for financial crimes," Dhakal said, "the regulation of criminal activities caused by poverty and scarcity."

The anger caused by the coronavirus crisis and the lockdown that take the form of street protests. In such a scenario, the police should use the force, but should ensure that no harm is caused to both sides.

"In addition to the crisis triggered by COVID-19, the management of internal control within the police force, the chain of command, dissatisfaction, etc. is seeking the attention of the leadership," Dhakal said.

Former DIG Hemanta Malla claims that the biggest obstacle for the new leadership is to spare the diminishing reputation and popularity of power. "Be it the Nirmala rape and murder scandal or the gold trafficking scandal or even the shortcomings noted in the preparation of a career within the police force," Former DIG Malla told Khabarhub, "the biggest challenge for the new IGP is to maintain the prestige of the organization."

According to Malla, discontent is on the rise in the company. "Political involvement has led to a decrease in the glory of the company, so leadership should ensure that more than the political sycophancy of the chain of command is important. Along with it, if the confidence of the civilian is restored, the leadership will prove successful, "Malla concluded.
