Three killed, 20 missing in Sindhupalchowk floods

KATHMANDU, Three people have been killed and 20 others have gone missing in floods and landslides caused by incessant rains in Sindhupalchowk district last night. Three people have died when 11 houses were washed away by a local Yalmo vertical river in Barhabise Municipality-5. According to local Suren Bikram Yonjan, the bodies of 25-year-old Nikesh Basnet and his 3-year-old daughter have been found at the spot. The address of the other person has not been disclosed. Another 16 people have gone missing.

Yonjan said an army and police team was searching for him. The deceased have been identified as Nikesh's wife Sabina Basnet and local Subesh Tamang. He said that 10 houses have been damaged and about 50 houses along the Bhotekoshi bank are at high risk of floods. The vertical river has washed away huge stones and mud and damaged the houses. Similarly, four members of the same family have gone missing after two houses were washed away by the Bulkute River in Dhyale of Bhotekoshi Gaonpalika Ward No. 5. Ward Secretary Tek Prasad Adhikari informed that Dorje Tamang, his daughter-in-law Manju Tamang, two grandchildren Sahel and Pasang Nurbu have gone missing.

According to him, two others have been injured. Secretary Adhikari informed that the Bulkute River also washed away a concrete bridge on the Araniko Highway. Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives Agni Prasad Sapkota has reached Sindhupalchowk in an army helicopter. Speaker Sapkota, who underwent cataract surgery only yesterday, went to his home constituency of Barhabise in his home district after the floods and landslides caused severe damage, said his press expert Shridhar Neupane.
