Chatha: A fundamental festival of the Newar community today

BHAKTAPUR. Today, on the occasion of Bhadra Shukla Chaturthi, the Newar community is celebrating Chatha with pomp and circumstance by worshiping Ganesha in the morning and the moon at night, wishing that there would be no theft in life. They offer dubo, laddu and radish to Ganesh. There is a belief that by doing this, Ganesh will be happy and his wishes will be fulfilled.

Ganesh Chaturthi is considered by the Newar community of Bhaktapur as a festival to bring in Dashain. As the beginning of Dashain is considered as a festival, the Newar community has a tradition of bringing meat in the house these days. In the Newar community, there is a religious belief that if the Chatha festival is good, the Dashain will be good. Today, the farmers of Bhaktapur worship their own ginger cultivation. There is a tradition of worshiping the moon in the evening.

There is a belief that if you worship the moon properly, you will not be blamed as a thief in your life. In the evening, they worship the moon by placing eight types of roasted nuts including lotus leaves, lotus leaves, and haledo leaves on offerings, cucumber, pear, pomegranate, mango and corn, gram, bakulla, maize, soybean, wheat. It is customary for everyone in the house to sit down and eat the fruits and nuts offered to the moon.

There are two traditions of moon worship in the Newar community. Some communities, with the belief that they should not see the moon, worship the moon in secret so that even the light of the moon cannot penetrate inside the house by putting curtains or clothes on all the windows and doors of the house. In another community, all the members of the house gather in the courtyard of the house and wait for the moon, and only after the moon appears do they go inside the house after worshiping and eating offerings. Worshiping the moon at night means that a person's appearance is temporary and secondary, and his message is that his good side is his work, says culturologist and historian P.D. Purushottamlochan Shrestha explains.

According to the mythology, one day in the Satyayuga, during a devasabha in the heavens, Chandrama insulted and insulted Ganesha saying that he had the face of an elephant's head. Ganesha could not bear it and cursed Chandrama to blame anyone who looked at your face. Due to the effect of the same curse of Ganesha, from that day onwards, everyone who looked at the face of the moon began to feel guilty. Then even the gods and goddesses stopped looking at the face of the moon.

This caused great disgrace to the moon and made it impossible for the moon to come out and even walk. Then Chandra reached the shelter of Mahadev. With the help of Mahadev, he apologized to Ganesh by climbing Duvo, Laddu and Mula. Impressed by Chandrama's apology, Ganesh gave the gift of looking at the face of the moon on days other than one day of Bhadra Shukla chatrurthi. Also, there is a folklore that the tradition of worshiping the moon at night on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi has been established as Ganesha worships the moon at night.

Traditionally, the birthdays of Mahadev and Parvati's son Ganesh are also celebrated on this day. Therefore, today is also considered as "Ganesh Chauthi". On this day, special poojas and processions are held at various Ganesha places in Newa: Basti. Similarly, the Marwari community, which is accustomed to trading and business, has been worshiping Ganesha for a week by making idols from this day onwards.

But there is a big difference between the Newa community and the Marwari community in terms of worship and family. Newa: In society, Ganesh is also made non-vegetarian, while Marwari society is completely vegetarian, so the dishes also seem to be completely sweet.

Therefore, every year on this date, people used to visit the temples of Ganesha in Hindu countries including Nepal and India. Today, there is a tradition of taking lingo from Bhaktapur to Basantapur in Kathmandu for Indrajatra. Lingo has been postponed this year due to the Corona epidemic. The rehearsal of Dashain was also magnificent by worshiping "Chathadya:". But this time around, coronavirus infections are likely to occur worldwide.
