Russia charged with shooting satellite missile in space

KATHMANDU: Russia has been accused by the US of developing a weapon-like projectile in space that could be used to strike orbiting satellites, said international media.

The US State Department has classified the recent use of "what would appear to be an actual anti-satellite weaponry in space" as important.

Earlier, Russia's defense ministry said it used new technologies to perform tests on Russian space equipment, the study states.

The US has already expressed questions about new activity on Russian satellites.

But this is the first time the UK has made allegations about Russian space test-firing. We come just days after an inquiry has found the UK government has "badly underestimated" Russia's threat.

Christopher Ford, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation, accused Moscow of hypocrisy in a statement on Thursday after it said it wanted to extend arms control to space.

"Moscow attempts to curb US capabilities while simply having no intention of stopping its own counter-space program," he said.
