TOKYO, (AP)—Japan's disaster management agency says that the death toll from recent floods has risen to 50, and at least a dozen others are still missing.

Pounding rain has caused widespread flooding since late Friday in Japan's southern region of Kyushu.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency announced that 49 of the dead had been confirmed since Tuesday morning from riverside towns in the Kumamoto area. One person was found dead in Fukuoka as heavy rain spread across the southern region. There are at least a dozen people missing.

Rescue operations have been plagued by floodwater and ongoing harsh weather.
