In the care of Covid-19 patients, the hospital mobilises infected health staff

BHKTAPUR, A hospital in Sanga of Kavre has mobilised infected health workers in the care of Covid-19 patients after uninfected health workers were not adequately present.

It does not entail any risk, however, as both groups have no symptomatic cases, and concerned government authorities, as well as patients, have consented to the model, reports Dr. Raju Dhakal, Medical Director of the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre.

In addition, health workers have taken all necessary precautions including three-level personal protective gear, Dr. Dhakal says. Similarly, the hospital made the use of masks and face covers compulsory for the patients.

There are currently nine health staff infected at the hospital including one doctor, two physiotherapists, five nurses and one paramedic. Similarly, there are nine other sick individuals, including eight patients receiving therapy and one of their relatives taking care of a child.

A security guard working at the center had been testing positive for coronavirus about two weeks earlier. Then his touch was tracked inside the hospital to find more cases.

"We've also collected swab samples from another 120 people here," Dr. Dhakal says, "Their results are expected. And I think we're going to add a couple more cases.

The hospital has prepared a separate isolation ward for symptomatic cases whereas they could be referred to other hospitals also if need be, according to him. The hospital is taking care of 51 spinal injury patients currently.
