KATHMANDU: Villarreal have won the European Champions League after beating Manchester United in a tiebreaker. This is the first major European title won by Spanish club Villarreal. Gerard Moreno scored in the 29th minute to give Villarreal the lead. Edinson Cavani equalized for Manchester in the 55th minute.
After that, both teams could not score any more goals in the allotted 90 minutes and extra time. In the penalty shootout, 10 players from both clubs scored. Then it was the goalkeeper's turn. Villarreal goalkeeper Goronimo Rulli scored the first goal. And, Manchester goalkeeper David de Gea blocked the shot.
This is the fourth Europa League title for Villarreal coach Unai Emery. He had previously made Sevilla the Europa League champions for three consecutive seasons from 2013 to 2016.
With the win, Villarreal have also been selected for next year's Champions League. Finalists Manchester had already been selected in the Champions League as they finished second in the English Premier League. (Input with Agency)
