SP task force suspend Sarita Giri

KATHMANDU, Samajbadi Party Nepal is preparing to suspend lawmaker Sarita Giri for violating the party whip in order to withdraw her amendment registered at the Parliament Secretariat against the second amendment of the constitution by the government.

The amendment aimed at updating the country's new map on the national emblem was unanimously endorsed by the lower house on Saturday. Giri's amendment sought to retain the old map in the national emblem because there was no evidence to support Lipmiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani as part of Nepal, she argued.

However, Speaker Sapkota decided to withdraw her proposal, in accordance with Clause 112 of the Rules of Procedure of the House of Representatives, which states that any amendment to the bill can not contradict the primary spirit of the bill itself. Giri boycotted the House after the Speaker declared that her controversial amendment had been scrapped.

Giri represents the Samajbadi Party in the House of Representatives as Proportional Representative Member of the Khas-Arya quota. Party insiders said that she was no longer a Samajbadi Party legislator as soon as she failed to comply with the party whip.

The leader of the party, Uma Shankar Argariya, had issued a whip directing Giri to withdraw the proposal as the party had decided to vote in favor of the Government's amendment bill.

All 258 Members of Parliament who were present at the House meeting on Saturday voted in favor of the bill endorsing the new map of Nepal, which depicts Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limipiyadhura as Nepalese territories.
