All services will be stopped on Sunday except emergency and COVID-19 services

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) announced on Sunday that all services, except for emergencies and COVID-19, should be stopped at health institutions across the country.

The protest was declared in support of Dr. Govinda KC, who for the past 27 days has been on a hunger strike demanding reform of the medical education sector in Nepal.

The NMA, Nepal's umbrella doctors' organisation, has voiced serious objections to the ongoing talks, claiming that they are limited to mere formalities.

Dr. Badri Rijal, General Secretary of the Organization, issued a press release urging the government to bring to a logical conclusion the talks with Dr. KC 's representative.

The NMA has warned that if an agreement is not reached by Sunday, a stern agitation will be forced to commence.

The government had urged Dr. KC earlier today to postpone his hunger strike.

The government negotiation team had released a statement on Saturday urging Dr. KC to call off the strike after the talks failed late Friday night.

The talks between the government and the members of KC on Thursday and Friday night were inconclusively terminated.

Dr. KC, who is at TUTH on the 27th day of his 19th fast-to-death, began his hunger strike to call for the enforcement of his previous agreements with the government.

Dr. KC, an activist for reforms in the Nepalese medical sector in Nepal, said he would not break his hunger strike this time until a stable basis for enforcing his previous agreements was created.
